How I Source Pre-Loved Products to Sell Online

Beyond the ordinary

Finding stock online can sometimes feel like a nightmare, especially when you’re just starting out. Many people ask on Whatnot, “Where do you find your suppliers?” and it’s true — some sellers are hesitant to share their sources. They worry that if everyone uses the same supplier, they’ll run out of stock. I completely understand that concern, However, the reality is that there are plenty of suppliers out there for everyone. Stock sourcing isn’t a secret club — it’s about research, patience, and finding what works for you. With time and experience, you’ll discover suppliers that fit your niche, your budget, and your values, and there’s more than enough opportunity to go around.

The key is to know where and how to look, and to be patient. Here’s what has worked for me:

Start With What You Already Have

The very first place I source from is my own home. Wardrobes, cupboards, drawers, and storage boxes often hold items that are no longer used but still have plenty of life left in them. This is the easiest and safest way to start selling online because it costs nothing and helps you learn as you go.

If you’re a beginner, I always recommend starting here before spending any money.

Car Boot Sales, Jumble Sales and Local Markets

Car boot sales are one of my favourite sourcing places. You can often find unique, good-quality items at very low prices, especially early in the morning. I look for well-made clothing, timeless styles, and home décor pieces that still feel current.

The key is not to rush. Take your time, trust your instincts, and only buy items you genuinely think someone else would love.

Charity Shops and Second-Hand Stores (Separate Post for this one)

Charity shops are brilliant for sourcing pre-loved items ethically. Not only are you keeping items out of landfill, but you’re also supporting good causes at the same time. I focus on quality fabrics, popular brands, and pieces in good condition.

Some days you’ll find nothing — and that’s okay. Sourcing is about patience, not pressure.

What I Look for When Sourcing

When choosing items to sell, I ask myself:

  • Is it in good condition?

  • Would I be happy to buy this myself?

  • Is it clean, wearable, or usable?

  • Does it fit my brand and values?

I don’t chase trends. I focus on items that feel timeless, well-made, and worth saving from waste.

Additional Information to Help

1. Start With Research
Take time to explore online marketplaces, directories, and wholesale websites. Many suppliers are easy to find once you know what to search for. Look for platforms that specialize in pre-loved or sustainable items if that aligns with your business values.

2. Join Communities
Online selling communities, forums, and social media groups are invaluable. People share tips on finding stock, trends, and even negotiating with suppliers. While some may hold back their exact sources, you can still learn a lot from their experiences.

3. Diversify Your Sources
Don’t rely on just one supplier. Mix pre-loved items, local thrift shops, charity stores, car boot sales, and online wholesalers. This not only keeps your stock varied but also protects your business if one source becomes unavailable.

4. Build Relationships
Once you find suppliers you like, treat them well. Consistency, respect, and clear communication go a long way. Good suppliers appreciate reliable buyers and may even offer better deals or early access to stock over time.

5. Focus on What Sells
Don’t chase every trend or supplier. Start by sourcing items that you know sell well in your niche. Track what works, refine your sourcing strategy, and grow gradually.

6. Stay Sustainable
If possible, prioritize pre-loved, surplus, or ethically produced items. This not only aligns with your values but also sets your business apart. Many buyers are looking for sellers who care about the environment and reducing waste.

Remember, finding stock is a journey, not a race. There’s no single “perfect supplier,” but with patience, research, and a little creativity, you can build a consistent supply that works for you.
